Best Buy is already stocking the unannounced third-generation Chromecast

Either way, now we know another product that will be announced at Google's hardware event - the company is running out of surprises.

Reddit user GroveStreetHomie was able to purchase the device, and apparently had the intention of picking up the two-year old Chromecast Ultra for their new TV. The "snafu" took place at a Best Buy in the USA, where the customer who goes by the name GroveStreetHomie on Reddit simply wanted to buy a second generation Chromecast. Then when I was at the cashier, they couldn't scan the item because it wasn't in the system yet because the release date is on the 9th of October (Same day as the 2018 Google event) but I guess they put it out too early.

The new version of the Chromecast features the same $35 price as the 2015 model and includes a number of subtle visual differences.

9to5Google claims to have access to some more images of the all-new Google Chromecast which show the box and the device from different angles. The Chromecast 3 is also seen rocking a new design, embracing a more matte design instead of the glossy finish found on the Chromecast 2.

Even though this is definitely an updated Chromecast, it's still not clear if this is the model that passed through the FCC last month. It is still said to charge through micro-USB (and not the new USB Type-C standard) but the HDMI connector no longer sticks magnetically to the device. Since it has been a couple of years since the Chromecast Ultra was announced, we expected a replacement, and aside from confirming the dongle's existence, an FCC filing reveals the new Chromecast will support Bluetooth outside of utilizing it exclusively for setup.

GroveStreetHomie said he could not use the device yet, however - it requires an update via the Google Home app that hasn't been released yet. Google will likely launch all these devices (and maybe more) on October 9 which will finally end all speculations about these devices.
