CDC: Flu vaccination rates for Minnesota children drop with age

Get Ready, Medical Folks Say Another 'Bad' Flu Season Coming

Three flu strains were the cause of this past season's outbreak: influenza B, H1N1, and H3N2. Pneumonia is a serious flu complication that can result from either influenza virus infection alone or from co-infection of flu virus and bacteria. The flu can increase the risk of heart attacks, strokes and other deadly complications.

We're coming off a particularly nasty flu season a year ago. They got the flu from someone. However, there were many different prevalent types of flu in circulation last winter, which contributed to the high flu death rates as well as the vaccination's weakness. Dr. Daniel Jernigan, a CDC flu expert, noted to the AP that early signs point to this year's vaccine being a better match for the flu. "Of course, we want to get those who are young or old or have compromised immune systems, definitely want them, but everybody needs a flu vaccine". Another statistic of concern is that Nevadans have the worst influenza immunization rates in the country with only 33% of residents taking advantage of flu shots.

It's virtually impossible to predict the coming flu season.

"Getting the flu shot isn't just about keeping you safe and healthy", he said.

The CDC recommends that everyone over the age of 6 months get vaccinated each year.

The MMWR report on flu vaccination also covered the pertussis vaccine-also recommended during pregnancy-and the findings indicate that coverage of the tetanus toxoid, reduced diphtheria toxoid, and acellular pertussis (Tdap) vaccine was slightly higher, at 54.4%.

This year is the 100th anniversary of the worst pandemic in human history, the Spanish flu that killed 50 million to 100 million people during the winter of 1918-1919. "I'm afraid we've also learned that after acute flu, recovery may not be complete". Some older people and people with certain chronic illnesses may develop less immunity after vaccination.

Last year, 180 children died from the flu.

In a panel hosted by the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Washington on Thursday, Surgeon General Jerome Adams took a nasal vaccine - an effort, he said, to make flu prevention "go viral".

"When people who are already frail or on the edge, flu can knock down that first domino of progressive decline, progressive disability", Schaffner said. Neither type of vaccination can infect you with the flu.

Avoid close contact with people who are sick. A final estimate shows the vaccine was about 40 percent effective in reducing a person's risk of becoming sick enough to need to see a doctor.
