The blanket of webbing lets Tetragnatha spiders engage in a mating

Residents say the extensive spider webs have another benefit: keeping down mosquitoes.

The video, posted on YouTube by Giannis Giannakopoulos, shows a beach in the town of Aitoliko covered in webs almost 300m long.

Reuters reports that giant spiderwebs recently started blanketing the shores of Aitoliko in western Greece.

A spider web spanning almost 1,000ft has appeared in Greece, where locals say unusually high mosquito activity took place before the web appeared.

The 1,000 foot area of greenery has been overrun by the sprawling web as spiders build a temporary home in order to mate. This year, a sizable increase in the mosquito population is also an important driver for the spiders' prolific web spinning.

Mr Giannakopoulos added it was "a odd an unprecedented spectacle".

"It's as if the spiders are taking advantage of these conditions and are having a kind of a party", Chatzaki said, according to the BBC.

Behind the phenomenon, Pergantis said, are the spiders' favorite snacks: gnats.

"When an animal finds abundant food, high temperatures and sufficient humidity, it has the ideal conditions to be able to make large populations", Chatzaki explains adding that this is not the phenomenon's first occurrence.

Scientists say the arachnids are merely enjoying the attractive weather and availability of food, taking the opportunity to "party". "The spiders will have their party and will soon die", she concluded.
