Spiders are 'having a party' in this terrifying 1,000-foot web

A lagoon in western Greece is covered in a 1,000-foot spider web as mating season hits the island of Aitoliko

Spurred into overdrive by an explosion in the populations of insects they eat, thousands of little spiders in the western Greek town have shrouded coastal trees, bushes and low vegetation in thick webs.

Chatzaki said that the conditions were ideal for the spiders to reproduce.

A spooky scene of a 300m-long spider web cloaking a scenic seaside in Greece has been attributed to a mass of frisky spiders in the heat.

Resident Giannis Giannakopoulos shared images of a "huge veil" of spider webs on Facebook earlier this week, adding that the spiders seemed to be catching and eating a lot of mosquitoes.

The spiders are from the genus Tetragnatha, known as stretch spiders due to their elongated bodies.

"It's as if the spiders are taking advantage of these conditions and are having a kind of a party", Chatzaki said, according to the BBC. This year, a sizable increase in the mosquito population is also an important driver for the spiders' prolific web spinning. "They mate, they reproduce and provide a whole new generation".

While the giant spider-web in Aitoliko, Greece, might look freaky, the phenomenon is not at all harmful for humans, animals in the region, or the local flora. Moreover and according to biologist Maria Chatzaki, they pose no threat to the flora and fauna of the environment. When that happens, the spider population will decrease as well. The spiders will "party" and die out soon.

"It's the simple prey-predator phenomenon".

Molecular Biologist Maria Chatzaki said: "These spiders are not risky for humans and will not cause any damage to the area's flora".
