Florence is blamed for at least 41 deaths in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia.

With the crisis slowly moving to SC, emergency managers on Friday ordered about 500 people to flee homes along the Lynches River.

Duke also raised an emergency alert Thursday after floodwaters from the Cape Fear River near Wilmington, N.C., spilled over a dike, threatening a retired coal-fired plant now used as a generating station run with natural gas, reports the AP. Sheehan described the incident as a "developing situation" and said the company can't rule out that ash might be escaping and flowing into the river. The river isn't expected to crest until early next week, and could reach three feet above record stage. North Carolina is one of the leading hog-producing states in the country. The water has receded in some places but as it moves downstream, officials say, thousands of people could be in danger until next week. Some areas could stay underwater for weeks, forecasters warned.
