This town in Greece is draped in thousands of spider webs

A huge blanket of cobwebs has cloaked a lagoon-side area in the western Greek town of Aitoliko.

High temperatures have sparked a sexual frenzy among spiders in Greece - causing the creatures to build a vast network of webs across a lagoon.

According to arachnologist Maria Chatzaki, they're always from the same type of spider: the Tetragnatha genus, a tiny critter no longer than 2 centimeters, or 0.7 inches. There are hundreds of species of these spiders that live in various parts of the world. Photographs published online show the almost 1,000-foot web stretching across a beach, according to the Greek site NewsIt.

Molecular biologist Maria Chatzaki told Greek news website Newsit.gr: "These spiders are not unsafe for humans and will not cause any damage to the area's flora".

Neither the gnats nor these spiders are unsafe to humans.

Behind the phenomenon, Pergantis said, are the spiders' favorite snacks: gnats. Though those with phobias may find the sudden presence frightening, experts say these spiders aren't risky to humans and were likely just taking advantage of favorable mating conditions. "The spiders will have their party and will soon die", she told Sky News, adding that the phenomenon takes place every few years.

Chatzaki also pointed out that the increased number of spiders in the area should be seen as a positive since it is the only effective way nature has to combat mosquitoes which she notes have also been seen in the area in greater numbers than usual. They thrive in hot, humid temperatures and continue to reproduce during that time.
