This Is Why The US Are Really Panicking About Hurricane Florence

Hurricane Florence from space

Although slow weakening is expected to begin by late Thursday, Florence is expected to be an extremely unsafe major hurricane when it nears the USA coast late Thursday and Friday, the National Hurricane Center said.

Natural gas distribution companies and electric utilities ramped up their preparedness efforts as the path of Hurricane Florence, a Category 3 storm as of 2 p.m. ET Wednesday, took a notable shift and was set to approach the coast of North Carolina or the northern coast of SC beginning Thursday.

The storm's maximum sustained winds were clocked late on Wednesday at 110 miles per hour (175 kph), down from a peak of 140 mph a day earlier, before it was downgraded to a Category 3, then a Category 2, on the five-step Saffir-Simpson scale of wind strength.

Hurricane Florence has been forecast to smash into North Carolina between Thursday and Friday but forecaster Janice Dean said there is uncertainty about the exact path the storm will take.

The storm is expected to arrive on the East Coast as early as Thursday, and is expected to ride north for several days.

Florence is expected to produce heavy and excessive rainfall, with coastal North Carolina expected to see 20-30 inches and in some isolated places, up to 40 inches. This storm is going to be a direct hit.

Thinking of the outages likely to come, it also warns to use grills and generators outside - away from doors and windows.

Emergency preparations in SC now include more than 2,100 of the state's National Guard soldiers.

Duke Energy, a firm that owns the two power plants, told Reuters it is preparing for Florence by removing any loose object that could cause damage when the storm hits. But his partner, Emily Whisler, said she will remain behind at the university where she is a resident in the psychiatry program.

A tropical storm watch is in effect for north of the North Carolina/Virginia border to Cape Charles Light, VA, and for Chesapeake Bay south of New Point Comfort.

Speaking at a news conference, the official said the hurricane was expected to spread out into the Central Appalachian mountains, the Tennessee Valley, and southeastern parts of the United States after Saturday.

"Just because we have a landfall to your south, that doesn't mean you're out of the woods, because the winds are huge around this system", NHC Director Ken Graham said, pointing out the wide risk of flooding. Residents in some parts of the Carolinas have been ordered to evacuate.

"This is a hurricane event followed by a flood event", said South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster.

"It's now not precisely equal to Hugo, but it without a doubt is forecast to be a serious hurricane making landfall, so in that sense this is seemingly to be adore Hugo", National Climate Service meteorologist Jake Wimberley informed The Charlotte Observer.

The storm's direction, moving straight into the coast at a perpendicular angle rather than along it, increases the severity of the storm surge, Young said.
