Police said a 26-year-old man died after being attacked by a shark off Cape Cod in MA.

The man, identified Saturday night as Arthur Medici, was boogie boarding about 300 yards south of Newcomb Hollow Beach in Wellfleet when a shark attacked him around 12:15 p.m., according to authorities.

Mr Booth said the attack victim and his friend were boogie-boarding when the attack happened.

This was the second shark attack on Cape Cod this summer.

On Aug. 15, a great white shark bit a NY man swimming off Long Nook Beach in Truro, Mass. He's now recovering in a Boston hospital.

Although there was at least one shark warning sign on the beach, the fatal attack was the first of its kind in 80 years.

However, shark sightings around the Cape have reportedly been more frequent this year, leading to several beach closings. Residents and guests should avoid swimming near seals, stay close to shore, avoid swimming in areas known for sharks and avoid dawn, dusk and night swimming, among other precautions, the chamber said.

"It was like right out of that movie Jaws".

The two legislators thanked the Wellfleet Fire and Police departments, the town's beach staff and bystanders "whose preparation and quick action provided help as soon as possible".

"It is truly unfortunate that this had to happen", Beaty said.

Booth said others on the beach attempted to make a tourniquet while others frantically called 911.

The chief ranger at the Cape Cod National Seashore, Leslie Reynolds, told the Cape Cod Times that rangers and Wellfleet police performed CPR on the victim on the beach after the bite.

Reinhart said she hoped to discuss the incident with fellow Select Board members before saying anything further. Many locals say it's the norm to swim fearlessly in the water because shark attacks are so rare. "Right spot, wrong time, I guess". It's also the first fatal attack in the United States since April 2015.
