USA weather authorities say that as of Wednesday night, local time, Hurricane Florence was moving northwest over the Atlantic and is expected to hit North Carolina on Friday afternoon.

The storm's maximum sustained winds were clocked at 120 miles per hour (193 km per hour), down from a peak of 140 mph a day earlier before Florence was downgraded from a Category 4.

In addition to inundating the coast with wind-driven storm surges of seawater as high as 9 feet (2.7 meters) along the Carolina coast, Florence could dump 20 to 30 inches (51-76 cm) of rain, with up to 40 inches (1 metre) in parts of North Carolina, the NHC said.

They don't retire the name of every hurricane - and there's already a buzz that Florence will join the likes of Hazel (1954), Hugo (1989), Fran (1996) and Isabel (2003), the four most destructive hurricanes to strike the southeastern United States.

Florence's intensity has diminished since it roared ashore along the US mid-Atlantic coast on Friday as a hurricane.

"The time to prepare is nearly over", North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper told a morning news conference.

The storm made landfall on Friday near Wilmington, a city of about 120,000 squeezed between North Carolina's Atlantic coastline and the Cape Fear River. "We just need to figure out how to make it through".

South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster ordered as many as a million residents of the state's eastern coast to leave their homes ahead of the storm's predicted arrival tomorrow.

Jeff Byard, an administrator at the Federal Emergency Management Agency, said: Do you want to get hit with a train or do you want to get hit with a cement truck?

Early Thursday Florence was about 235 miles (378 kilometers) east southeast of Wilmington, North Carolina and about 280 miles (450 kilometers) east southeast of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

Utility officials have warned that widespread power outages are likely and that it could take weeks to restore electricity.

The storm is not expected to change much in strength before making landfall.

North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Washington, D.C., and Maryland have declared a state of emergency in anticipation of the storm.

People fleeing coastal North and SC clogged highways Wednesday as Florence bore down for a direct hit in the low-lying region dense with beachfront vacation homes.

As the trough moves east, it will disrupt the winds that steer the hurricane, Stewart said.

Nurse Barbara Mack was using a small shovel to fill sandbags at a public works facility in Charleston, but she saw a silver lining in the hurricane preparations.

The rest of South and North Carolina as well as southwest Virginia may see up to 24 inches of rain. Hurricane Helene and Subtropical Storm Joyce were off in the Atlantic, posing no threat.
