Holidaymakers moved away from cliff face but feared more could fall

Seven people were injured yesterday when a landslide sent rocks crashing down on to a Greek beach packed with tourists.

British holidaymakers have described scenes "like Dunkirk" after tons of rock fell from a cliff face onto a packed tourist beach on the Greek island of Zante.

The beach at Navagio, known as Shipwreck Beach, is popular with tourists.

Seven people were injured on Thursday after a part of the cliff overshadowing the beach gave way. Greek authorities say a landslide at a popular beach on the western island of Zakynthos has resulted in at least one injury, while coast guard officials were seeking to determine whether there were any people missing.

A government statement said a 34-year-old Czech woman had been hospitalised with a fractured vertebra, while her husband and two children sustained light injuries.

A couple of small vessels overturned from the force of the fall and the subsequent high waves.

He continued: "I thought more was coming and with the size of the waves coming towards me I just started running".

According to a Reuters report, authorities said no one was missing as result of the rockslide but they were conducting a search as a precaution, in case people were trapped under the rocks.

Imagine the worst beach trip you possibly can.

Josh O'Connell, 21, of Kilkenny, Ireland, who works for a tour company on Zante, said there were more than a dozen tourist boats in the bay and 400-500 people in the area.
