Late-night hosts took aim at Donald Trump's latest set of tweets after he claimed that the Hurricane Maria death toll was fabricated by the Democrats.

Trump continued to cast doubt on the final death toll from Hurricane Maria on Friday, and distorted an academic study that estimated 3,000 deaths in Puerto Rico in the months after the storm. But I think this is more than politics.

A spokesman for former U.S. Rep. Ron DeSantis, who won the Florida GOP primary for governor with Trump's support, said he did not agree with Trump's tweets. He says, "Then, like magic, '3000 PEOPLE KILLED'". This number included deaths that were indirectly related to the storm.

Puerto Rico Gov. Ricardo Rosselló appeared to be aware of the critical distinction between Trump's tweet and the study.

President Donald Trump falsely claimed Thursday that research from the Milken Institute School of Public Health estimating 3,000 deaths in Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria was "done by the Democrats" to "make me look as bad as possible".

"But the President continues to refuse to acknowledge his responsibility, and the problem is that if he didn't acknowledge it in Puerto Rico, God bless the people of SC and the people of North Carolina", Cruz said.

When Trump visited the island territory last October, officials told him in a briefing that 16 people had died from Maria. On Wednesday he posted a video on his account stating that "we are ready" although "bad things can happen when you're talking about a storm this size". "If you've seen Trump Tower, I'm pretty sure blind people decorated it", Colbert said.

The true human cost of Maria, and the chaotic federal response to the storm on the United States island territory, triggered a year-long controversy, which Trump revived this week even as another powerful hurricane, Florence, bore down on the East Coast.

House Speaker Paul Ryan said he saw no reason to dispute the numbers found in the GWU study.

When asked what he planned on telling President Trump, Long said he was going to "let him know we're pre-positioned the best we can be". He worked in the Obama administration, and a year ago travelled to the island to help in the aftermath of Maria.

After reading the president's outrageous tweets to his audience, Colbert marveled at Trump's "love" for Puerto Rico, despite frequently trashing the local government there.

The Puerto Rican government commissioned the study in February.

Cora, who spends time in Puerto Rico in the offseason, said many people on the island are still struggling, but he's encouraged by the progress being made every day.

The head of Puerto Rico's general services administration says the water will likely be returned.

Rossello is a leader of the island's pro-statehood New Progressive Party, which aligns with Republicans, while Cruz is from the Popular Democratic Party, whose members affiliate with the Democratic Party.
