WVU’s Game Against NC State Called Off Due To Hurricane Florence

Florence may grow to a Category 5 hurricane by the time it hits the North Carolina coast early Friday morning.

The National Hurricane Center issued its first set of Hurricane and Storm Surge Watches Tuesday for the East Coast as Hurricane Florence continues its trek toward North Carolina.

Although Florence was still days from arrival, authorities took extraordinary measures to move people out of harm's way.

The hurricane center is continuing to forecast very risky storm surge and rip currents kicked up by the storm for the entire N.C. coast.

Motorists streamed inland on highways converted into one-way routes Tuesday as more than 1 million people in three states were ordered to get out of the way of Hurricane Florence, a hair-raising storm taking dead aim at the Carolinas with 130 miles per hour winds and potentially ruinous rains.

To whip up a monstrous storm like the one chugging for the Carolinas you need a handful of ingredients - and Florence has them all. "Don't bet your life on riding out a monster".

If Florence slows to a crawl just off the coast, it could bring torrential rains to the Appalachian mountains and as far away as West Virginia, causing flash floods, mudslides and other unsafe conditions. Usually storms come to the Carolinas and mid-Atlantic from the south - and those usually curve safely out to sea. "A lot of local people are staying", she said of the island, which is reachable only by ferry or plane.

The Category 4 storm's approach led to a series of schedule adjustments Tuesday for teams in the Carolinas and Virginia. With little wind shear to pull the storm apart, hurricane-strength winds have been expanding to 40 miles (64 kilometres) from the eye of the storm, and tropical-storm-force winds 150 miles from the centre.

North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia and Maryland governors have declared states of emergency.

In a statement, NC State said it worked with officials from West Virginia University, the ACC and emergency management personnel to "arrive at a decision in the best interests of the safety and well-being of fans, student-athletes and all parties involved".

People living well inland should prepare to lose power and endure flooding and other hazards, he warned. When it reaches inland ares, far from the coast, its high winds and heavy rains will knock down trees and wreak other havoc, according to the hurricane center.

"That's how the atmosphere works", he said. Florence is projected to make landfall Thursday afternoon or evening near the Carolina border.

President Donald Trump says the federal government is "absolutely, totally prepared" for Hurricane Florence as it heads toward the Eastern Seaboard.

"We are sparing no expense".

Trump faced severe criticism for his administration's response to Hurricane Maria a year ago in Puerto Rico.

In Virginia, James Madison has moved its home opener against Robert Morris from Saturday to Thursday night to get ahead of the storm. Get to the grocery store. Many gasoline stations were running low on fuel.

Mandatory evacuations are underway in coastal areas of several states in Hurricane Florence's path. "What is flooding going to do to our home, our city?"

That would make Florence the costliest storm ever to hit the U.S.in terms of property loss.

"Where else can we go?"
