Serbia's Novak Djokovic reacts after his win against Japan's Kei Nishikori during the Men's Singles Semi Finals match at the 2018 US Open at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York

The 31-year-old Serb won 6-3 7-6 (7-4) 6-3 to earn his third triumph in NY and equal American great Pete Sampras' haul of major trophies.

Del Potro was playing in his first Grand Slam final since lifting the US Open title in 2009 at the age of 20, beating Nadal and Federer back-to-back.

With this win, he has equaled Pete Sampras's mark of 14 Grand Slams. Roger Federer of Switzerland has 20 Grand Slam titles and Spain's Rafael Nadal has 17 singles' Grand Slam trophies to his name.

Novak Djokovic will be seeking his 14th Grand Slam title and Juan Martin del Potro his second when they meet in the U.S. Open final.

A focused Djokovic continued to apply pressure in the third set until Del Potro finally cracked on serve to fall behind 5-3, with the Serb closing out the match with a ferocious overhead victor.

Playing in the same era as two of the finest players in history may be seen as a negative but Djokovic says it has spurred him on and ensured he has taken his game to new heights.

Both players held serve for the rest of the set, then Djokovic won the tiebreaker 7-4 to go up 2-0 on sets to end del Potro's best chance of pulling off what would have been a shocking upset.

Leading 4-3, Djokovic caught Del Potro off guard with his exceptional patience and strong strokes to break Del Potro's serve.

Djokovic was thrilled to match Sampras with a 14th Grand Slam title at the US Open Sunday, but he said it's Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal who have made him the player he is.

For quite some time after that Djokovic looked towards Del Potro's singing friend with utmost anger, unable to get them out of his head and that showed on the court.

Novak Djokovic, of Serbia, celebrates after defeating Juan Martin del Potro, of Argentina. Djokovic is now tied with Sampras on number three in the list of players winning most number of grand slam titles in men's singles titles.

Newly-crowned US Open champions Novak Djokovic and Naomi Osaka have jumped up in the recent tennis rankings. "I'm very sad for being a loser today. I really do", said Djokovic, who gave his pal a hug at the net, and then went over to console del Potro as he wiped away tears at his sideline seat. "But I was playing nearly at the limit all the time, looking for winners with my forehands, backhands, and I couldn't make it because Novak was there every time". That victory established a career Grand Slam for the Serb, completing his collection of winning at least once at each of the four Slams. "I don't know when will be my last tournament in this career, but I'm excited to keep surprising myself doing things like this".

It was the ninth consecutive slam semi-final that the 31-year-old has won and sends him through to a 23rd final.

There may have been no game more important to Djokovic's win or simply entertaining than the eighth game of the second set.

Speaking at the post game press conference, Australia's latest sporting hero was proud of how he performed, before pointing to criticism he was bound to receive from cyberbullies online.
