Woodward Says His Anonymous Sources More Credible Than Public Denials, Trump Responds

Watergate's Woodward says 'Times' Trump op-ed not up to his standards

Gary Cohn right White House policy adviser Stephen Miller left and Rob Porter back walk toward the White House after arriving on Marine One in January

"It was clear that Trump did not understand the way the US government debt cycle balance sheet worked", Woodward wrote.

"The idea that the Secretary of Defense has to tell the president that all of these actions are created to prevent the ultimate catastrophe", Woodward said. Similarly, The New York Times op-ed prompted a parade of statements from top administration officials denying responsibility.

The essay said members of the administration were running a "two-track presidency", achieving Republican policy aims while sidelining the "amoral ... impetuous, adversarial, petty and ineffective" Trump until he was out of office.

Mr. Modi's alleged desire to be hosted at Camp David comes into discussion in the book in the context of former National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster's hot temper.

Among the revelations in the book: Cohn once removed a document from the president's desk that would have ended a trade deal with South Korea.

"He said - now, this is last month, a month ago - I had always treated him fairly".

Trump reacted furiously, accusing the writer of treason and demanding a Department of Justice investigation, though most analysts said no crime had been committed.

Even before the book came out, Trump called it a "scam", and Woodward a "liar". Woodward also writes that Trump refused to send any additional aid.

"To be clear", he wrote in a subsequent tweet, "a number of the statements attributed to me and from others to me in the Woodward book are incorrect". The Trump White House has shocked him more than any of the eight others he's covered, he added, because Trump fundamentally doesn't understand that national security is more than just the US military.

When faced with such advice, Woodward said, "President Trump will say, 'Well, I've had those ideas for 30 years, and if you disagree with me, you're wrong'".

Former chief of staff Reince Priebus is described as "a little rat", according to Woodward's book.

"And that's how you end the book", Colbert said.

Moreover, he said when the president berates a writer as big as Woodward it doesn't affect the writer much but those insults say a lot about Trump. The letter stated that the USA was planning to withdraw from a trade agreement with South Korea. Such gaps in explanation point to the author's political agenda, which the media has seriously misrepresented as being anti-Trump.

As details of the book's contents percolated out into the press ahead of its release, the president's stance had sharply changed.
