As Florence Surges Forward, Rethinking What Hurricane Preparation Looks Like

"This will likely be the storm of a lifetime for portions of the Carolina coast", the National Weather Service in Wilmington, N.C., said, "and that's saying a lot given the impacts we've seen from hurricanes Diana, Hugo, Fran, Bonnie, Floyd, and Matthew".

Florence exploded into a potentially catastrophic hurricane Monday as it closed in on North and SC, carrying winds up to 140 miles per hour (220 kph) and water that could wreak havoc over a wide stretch of the eastern United States later this week.

But despite the potentially devastating hurricane, forecast to make landfall on Friday with 130mph winds, people tried to offer some "relief" in the silence before the storm.

To put things in perspective, any storm surge taller than 12 feet is "life-threatening", National Hurricane Center Director Ken Graham said.

The message came two days after Gov. Henry McMaster ordered a mandatory evacuation of coastal counties because of Hurricane Florence. "It's going to destroy homes", said Jeff Byard, an official at the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

The category four hurricane is set to bring with it heavy rains and winds of up to 225 kilometres per hour.

The Category 3 storm has prompted more than a million people to flee the Carolinas and Virgina, as residents heed dire warnings from officials.

"I can't emphasise enough the potential for unbelievable damage from wind, storm surge and inland flooding with this storm".

Duke Energy Corp expected between 25 percent and 75 percent of its 4 million customers would lose power in the Carolinas.

As of 2 p.m., the storm was centred 435 miles (700 kilometres) southeast of Wilmington, North Carolina, moving at 16 mph (26 kph).

He warned people in surrounding areas to "remain vigilant" and expect flash floods at the start of next week. Shelters in the city were filling and some people were being bused inland to Raleigh, even though some residents there were told they might have to evacuate because of flooding.

"This storm is going to get stronger before it makes landfall", CNN meteorologist Chad Myers said.

He warned residents to take precautions "because once this storm is upon us, we're not going to be able to send emergency personnel out to rescue you". "Everyone was sold out", she said. The location was determined based on the track of Hurricane Florence and lodging availability, along with lessons learned from recent past difficulties returning home to an area impacted by widespread flooding.

The state of North Carolina is preparing for a major storm.

"This storm is a monster", North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper said.
