"We've [made the screen larger] with minimal changes to the case size", said Williams.
Detailed display specifications indicate that the resolution has been also increased, but that was surely done to compensate for the greater screen area.
The screen real estate is 35 percent larger on the 40mm Series 4 than on the 38mm Series 3. The peak brightness level of 1000 nits is also being retained. With this, the battery life of the Series 4 has been significantly improved as compared to previous models.
The basic model will run $399, while a cellular-compatible version will cost $499 - both will be available September 21.
The Digital Crown now has haptic feedback and the speaker has been redesigned to be 50 percent louder, which is handy for phone calls and talking to Siri. Don't fret; we'll keep you updated once we receive further updates from Apple. The microphone is now on the opposite side, away from the speaker to avoid echo and ensures better clarity. A gold stainless with a matching Milanese band will also be on offer.
At its Gather Round event in California, Apple announced the fourth generation Apple Watch. A Series 4 with Global Positioning System only starts at $399.
The digital crown, the spinning dial that allows you to flick through lists and press "enter" when clicked in, is back (with a red-ringed version marking that the Watch 4 has LTE connectivity inside) and above / below that (depending on which wrist you have the device on) is the power / multi-tasking button.
The watch will also be able to detect when the wearer is falling, a feature Apple say could help in emergencies.
With a focus on health in mind, the watch also has better heart rate monitoring, with better data collecting that can tell you if your heart rate is too slow, or too fast.
The Apple Watch Series 4 has electrodes on its back, allowing the user to take an electrocardiogram. This feature will be reaching to United States customers later this year followed by a wider rollout. The Apple Watch Series 4 starts at $599 for the GPS-only version, and $749 for the mobile option, available for order starting this Friday, and shipping on September 21. A gold stainless steel is a new finish coming to the Apple Watch Series 4. With a few hardware-related exceptions, of course - the ECG app, for example, will land only on the Series 4. The new smart watch models come in 40 mm and 44 mm sizes instead of 38 mm and 42 mm, and include new watch faces with more detailed complications. Perhaps the one-day battery life is the reason why Apple has yet to add an always-on display feature to its smartwatches. But perhaps most notably, the Apple Watch now lets users perform an electrocardiogram, or EKG, making the Apple Watch Series 4 the first FDA-approved, over-the-counter EKG consumer device.
