Trump says his response to the hurricane that killed almost 3,000 people was 'incredibly successful'

FEMA chief Coastal NC residents should leave

Trump said on Twitter that "they had anywhere from 6 to 18 deaths" at the time he visited the island after the storm. As time went by it did not go up by much. That number is less than a Harvard study released in May, which put the number at 4,645.

The San Juan mayor also retweeted a jab at Trump that referenced the incoming hurricane set to make landfall in the Carolinas later this week.

"It was one of the best jobs ever done with respect to what this is all about", Trump said Tuesday at a briefing, referring to the Hurricane Maria response.

Puerto Rico's government last month updated the death toll to 2,975 from an initial estimate of 64.

"Mr Trump you can try and bully us with your tweets BUT WE KNOW OUR LIVES MATTER", she tweeted.

Santana's images appear to have been taken by drone, and he accompanied them saying, "Although you do not believe it ... nearly a million boxes of water that were never delivered to the people of PR, before the emergency of Hurricane Maria".

Well in the wake of these comments, TMZ caught up with Fat Joe, who's actually been very vital in the relief efforts in Puerto Rico and asked him what he thought about Trump's comments, to which he called him "delusional". The death toll from the hurricane is now believed to be around 3,000, as many residents did not have access to basic necessities such as clean drinking water.

Mr Trump's tweets came as Hurricane Florence - a category two storm projected to bring catastrophic flooding - bears down on the US East Coast.

On Tuesday, Trump described the hurricane as "tremendously big and tremendously wet", and praised the government's maligned response to Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico a year ago.

At the time, the administration committed to a more aggressive response to storms that struck Texas, even as that situation there became more manageable and Puerto Rico desperately needed more assistance.

Photos first posted to social media this week by Abdiel Santana, a photographer working for a Puerto Rican police agency, showed tens of thousands of water bottles sitting on a tarmac in the city of Ceiba.

Cruz quickly responded, implying that the president was out of touch with what had really happened in Puerto Rico.
