Hurricane Florence projected path: When will Florence track hit Carolinas?
11 September 2018, 11:59 | Kelvin Horton
Mandatory evacuations issued for Outer Banks ahead of Florence
This could worsen if, as some meteorologists predict, Florence stalls after it makes landfall.
A fleet of federal hurricane hunting craft - including planes and personnel from NASA, the Air Force, and NOAA - take flights directly through hurricanes to give storm forecasters an improved idea of what's churning inside the storm, and what might happen next. Much of what we've heard so far relies on the upper limits of this hurricane being reached.
Any storm surge taller than 12 feet is "life-threatening", National Hurricane Center Director Ken Graham said. What you may be hearing about this storm isn't fear mongering because the potential of the storm is so great.
Mandatory evacuations are now in place for parts of the Carolinas and Virginia. Customers who use the MetroAccess service are advised to cancel their trips for Thursday and Friday. "If you are given an evacuation order, please comply immediately before roads get clogged and chaos commences".
The worst damage will occur to the north of where the hurricane makes landfall. The difference in shoreline damage on the right versus the left side of the storm will be incredible.
Storm surges such as those would be the equivalent in Chicago of lifting the level of Lake Michigan 15 to 20 feet, while bombarding the shoreline with 20-plus foot waves on top of all that water.
Several spots in the mid-Atlantic and Northeast had one of their wettest summers on record, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
The exact timing, location and magnitude of the storm's impacts on the USA southeast coast in not yet clear but forecast tracks show it could make landfall along the Carolinas and southeast Georgia.
The storm was getting bigger and better organized and is expected to continue to strengthen for the next day or so, the NHC said.
This is also one to watch.
What does Florence mean for us? Tropical storm force winds are rated at 39 to 73. It's easy to see this on some of the model forecasts that we use. "It could even be Category 5 by the time it gets here", McMaster cautioned. "There is no way to be completely safe", but going inland might not be much safer.
Officials in both North and SC are urging citizens to evacuate inland, especially those living in low-lying or coastal areas. These swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.
"This is going to produce heavy rainfall, and it may not move very fast". That lane reversal went into effect at 11 a.m. Tuesday.
On the opposite side of the country, officials in Hawaii are warning residents and tourists to brace for the arrival of Tropical Storm Olivia.
At least 19 killed in South Sudan plane crash
Among the three survivors, a 6 year old child, a man of adult age and a European now hospitalized in a critical condition. The aircraft was carrying passengers from Juba International Airport to the city of Yirol when it crashed.
Strengthening Hurricane Florence takes aim at U.S. Southeast
Florence has been moving more toward the west and slightly northwest, potentially making direct landfall coming in from the east. Hurricane Hazel came ashore at the South Carolina-North Carolina state line with winds of 130 miles per hour (209 kph) in 1954.
Max Pacioretty to Vegas in trade
When Montreal last made the playoffs in 2017, their top-three scorers were Max Pacioretty, Alexander Radulov, and Alex Galchenyuk. But with days to go before the start of training camp, the Montreal Canadiens have finally put an end to the saga.
Hurricane Florence continues to strengthen: NHC
Since noon Sunday, a Lowe's in Lumberton, North Carolina, has been sold out of generators, store manager Mackie Singletary said. " Florence is. expected to remain an extremely unsafe major hurricane through Thursday", the hurricane center warned.
