Hurricane Florence: Headed To North Carolina As Category 4 Storm

11 September 2018, 07:11 | Justin Tyler

TROPICS: Florence expected to produce damaging winds in Carolinas

Hurricane Florence causing 85-mph winds, will become major hurricane Monday

Hurricane Florence is rapidly intensifying and could strike a direct and unsafe blow anywhere from the Carolinas to the Mid-Atlantic region later this week, possibly as a fearsome category 4, forecasters said. To the west, a tropical disturbance has developed over the northwest Caribbean Sea.

"Folks, if you are in the Carolinas or Virginia - this is a historic storm", declared Eric Holthaus, meteorologist and journalist who writes about extreme weather and climate change for Grist.

We here in North Carolina are bracing for a hard hit.

It's not just North Carolina that is "taking Hurricane Florence seriously", either, in SC and Virginia residents have also declared states of emergency following the updates on the storm.

A tracker map from the center on Monday forecast the hurricane making landfall in the Carolinas Thursday morning, and expected the storm to continue through Saturday morning, when it will have weakened to a tropical depression.

"USC Athletics is now monitoring the forecast for Hurricane Florence". It was centered about 1,230 miles (1,985 kilometers) east-southeast of Cape Fear, North Carolina, and moving west at 13 mph (20 kph). Its centre will move between Bermuda and the Bahamas tomorrow and Thursday and approach the coast of SC or North Carolina on Friday, the National Hurricane Centre said. "Flooding is the deadliest result of these storms", he added.

During his press conference Monday, McMaster appeared open to the possibility of modifying his evacuation plan. Large swells could be generated and cause damage in some parts of the state, which survived brushes with hurricanes Hector and Lane in recent weeks.

The NWS is predicting "life-threatening" storm surge and inland freshwater flooding, with some models predicting upwards of 2ft of rainfall.

PETERSBURG — Two hurricanes are active in the Atlantic Ocean, according to the National Hurricane Center. It will likely become a major hurricane as early as Monday, reaching category 3 criteria.

Helene featured winds near 75 miles per hour was moving west.

Unsafe storms are also threatening parts of the U.S.in the Pacific Ocean.

The last storm to hit the Carolinas as a category 4 was Hurricane Hugo almost 30 years ago in 1989. But forecasters say residents should still beware of the chance for risky flooding and wind.

No coastal watches or warnings were in effect as of Monday morning.

Florence stands a significant chance of joining 2017's Harvey and Irma as just the third storm to make landfall on the U.S. mainland at category 4 strength (or higher) since 2005.

Delta said on Sunday that it's "keeping an eye" on the storm, though the Atlanta-based company did not say if or when it might issue its own waivers.
