Miss America contestant wins preliminary round for answer about kneeling protests

Nia Imani Franklin, who won the title Sunday night in Atlantic City while competing as Miss New York, said the changes in the 98-year-old are a welcome modernization.

We should let them know that "we as Americans are supporting them and that we are there to help them", she suggested, according to The Associated Press. During her 2019 reign as Miss America, Franklin plans to promote her social impact initiative, Advocating for the Arts.

"I just want to thank God for this, it took a lot of perseverance to get here", she said shortly after winning, also thanking her family and especially her father, who is a survivor of cancer.

Miss West Virginia Madeline Collins didn't win the heat, but she did win over some new fans with her candid answer.

After the competition, McPhail talked about her answer with the Press of Atlantic City.

The decision to drop the swimsuit competition created a good deal of controversy and criticism of current Miss America leadership.

Ultimately, Collins lost the interview portion of the contest to Miss Massachusetts, Gabriela Taveras, who fielded a question about how Americans travelling overseas should interact with foreigners.

The fourth runner up was Miss Massachusetts Gabriela Taveras; third runner up was Miss Florida Taylor Tyson; second runner up was Miss Louisiana Holli' Conway, and the first runner up was Miss Connecticut Bridget Oei.

While the evening gown portion of the competition was axed this year, most of the contestants still donned glittering gowns during a majority of the competition.

The outgoing Miss America, Cara Mund, says the two have bullied and silenced her, claims that the women deny.

ABC broadcast Miss America live from Atlantic City on Sunday night.

In a letter to past winners, published earlier this year, however, Mund wrote: "Our chair and CEO have systematically silenced me, reduced me, marginalized me and essentially erased me in my role as Miss America in subtle and not-so-subtle ways on a daily basis".

She was chosen from among 51 contestants in the first Miss America pageant to be held without a swimsuit competition in history.

In December, the Huffington Post revealed emails that showed former CEO Sam Haskell mocking competitors with misogynistic language.
