Microsoft gives longer grace period for Windows 10 updates

Microsoft Relents, Confirms Extended Support Option for Windows 7

The new policy builds on and extends the commitments made in February this year. Paid security fixes aren't a new thing for Microsoft, but what's different here is that this extended support will be offered uniformly to all volume license customers of Windows 7 Professional and Enterprise.

Earlier this year, Bradley wrote an open letter to various Microsoft executives, including CEO Satya Nadella, outlining the hundreds of grievances members of the patchmanagement.org group had reported to her about how Windows is updated. There have been some bugs that the team had to work out since then, which is why it's been nearly three weeks, but today, Microsoft released Windows 10 Insider Preview build 18234. This maintains the semi-annual update cadence as our north star and retains the option for customers that want to update twice a year. This includes current 1607, 1703, 1709, and 1803 versions, as well as all future feature updates in the Autumn time. "I still have to be moving between feature releases at a faster pace and I don't have the same resources for application compatibility and tools provided by Microsoft to help me". He adds, "We recognise that it takes time to both upgrade devices and operationalise new update processes".

The September feature updates of Windows 10 (including the increasingly oddly named "October 2018 Update") will also get 30 months of attention from Microsoft. If some user faces any problem, he/she can file a ticket via Microsoft FastTrack service.

Buying the ESUs means Windows 7 means customers will be able to continue to run Office 365 ProPlus, fully supported until 2023. According to Microsoft blog, more details on this new service will be shared at Ignite and will possibly begin to preview this service on 1 October 2018 in North America. While leading companies like Mars and Accenture have successfully shifted to modern desktop using the regular updates, many customers shared their feedback that they need more time and flexibility in the Windows 10 update cycle. As of 14 January, 2020, users of the aging OS will no longer receive security updates from Microsoft.

This latest update to Windows servicing schedule nearly gets it right, Microsoft should have pushed the support window to 36 months. The new biannual schedule was also aligned with other products like Office 365 ProPlus. It also noted that the Windows 7 ESU will be sold on a per-device basis and the price will increase each year. Users that do manage to fork out for the effort will see support for Windows 7 carried out until 2023, ending alongside the extended support for Windows 8.1. The extended Office 365 support described above will also cover Windows 7 ESU machines, in addition to Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2016.
