Storm season peaks: Hurricane Florence still far from landfall, uncertainty remains for East Coast

Several potential storms are heading West from Africa as the 2018 Atlantic Hurricane Season continues

Hurricane Florence has weakened but will likely grow into a major hurricane as it nears Bermuda, the National Hurricane Center says.

The NHC said Potential Tropical Cyclone Eight is becoming better organized and is expected to become a tropical depression or tropical storm later today.

Over the course of the past few days, social media posts showed snapshots of forecast models showing doom and gloom forecasts of showing Florence making landfall at one spot or another.

"The risk of other direct impacts associated with Florence along the U.S. East Coast next week has increased", the Center stated in its key messages.

On Wednesday, the storm was ranked a Category 4 hurricane, packing winds up to 130 miles per hour.

Gov. Roy Cooper declared a State of Emergency on Friday as Tropical Storm Florence heads toward the East Coast in an effort to help farmers harvest and transport their crops more quickly by waiving transportation rules.

The waves will make for rough seas along the USA coats, Bermuda, the northern shores if the Caribbean and the Canada Maritimes.

The National Hurricane Center said Florence's maximum sustained winds Friday morning were estimated to be 65 miles per hour (104 kph).

The peak of hurricane season in the Atlantic Ocean is September 10, and right on schedule, the Atlantic Basin has come to life with numerous areas of concern.

Tropical Storm Helene is in the Far Eastern Atlantic, just off the African Coast. "Florence's weakening appears to have stopped", the National Hurricane Center wrote in its advisory.

Even if Florence stays out to sea, models show other systems developing over the Atlantic, nearly on cue as the hurricane season hits its peak Monday.

"Swells generated by Florence will begin to affect Bermuda on Friday and will reach portions of the US East Coast over the weekend".

Most storms in that region tend to curve away from the United States.

By Monday, the storm will be passing south of Bermuda. But it is reasonably likely some coastal areas will deal with a damaging wind threat, flooding rain, and a substantial storm surge - which is a rise in ocean water above normally dry land.
