Tropical Storm Gordon should strike Gulf Coast as hurricane, forecasters predict

The storm was lashing South Florida on Monday with high winds and heavy rains as it moved west-northwest at 16 miles per hour (26 kph). Heavy rains are expected over the Gulf Coast states. The National Hurricane Center has issued a hurricane watch through Tuesday night, particularly in coastal areas of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama.

Pat Landry, who owns the Landry House bed and breakfast on Louisiana's Grand Isle, said late Monday night that he was trying to pick up everything low in the yard in preparation for the storm surge expected with Gordon's arrival.

Many factors will influence the storm's path in coming weeks, Ellis said, making threats uncertain at this time. The National Hurricane Center will be sending a plane to investigate Gordon Monday afternoon, hoping to use that data to refine future forecasts on the projected track and strength of the season's seventh named storm.

It is forecast to come ashore on Tuesday near the border between Louisiana and MS, and drop as much as 8 inches of rain in some areas of the US South, which is still recovering from hurricanes a year ago.

Separately, Tropical Storm Florence continues to hold steady over the eastern Atlantic.

Meteorologists were also tracking Tropical Storm Florence Monday, which was moving west with sustained winds of almost 70 mph about 1,400 miles east of the Lesser Antilles islands.

Maximum sustained winds of the unnamed system have been clocked at 30mph and the system is moving west-northwest at 15mph.

People in the warned area should prepare for tropical storm conditions - strong wind and heavy rainfall.

A hurricane watch was in effect from the mouth of the Pearl River to the Alabama-Florida border.

A storm surge warning was in effect for the area between Shell Beach, Louisiana, and Dauphin Island, Alabama, with predicted heights of up to 3-5 ft if the peak surge coincides with high tide.

The storm is expected to move away from the southwestern Florida coast and reach coastal MS and Louisiana by late Tuesday. High shear prevents a storm from organizing or can even tear it apart.

Gordon is forecast to strengthen into a hurricane, with sustained winds of at least 74 miles per hour, before it reaches the north central Gulf Coast late Tuesday, the National Hurricane Center said.

A tropical depression or tropical storm may form in the Northern Gulf of Mexico this week.

Rip current risks are in place along Florida's south east coast, north east coast and along the shore between Tallahassee and Pensacola.
