Tropical Storm Gordon hits Gulf Coast
06 September 2018, 04:57 | Justin Tyler
Emergency declared as Tropical Storm Gordon heads for Gulf Coast
Gordon never became a hurricane as forecast and weakened into a depression on Wednesday, just hours after making landfall near the Alabama-Mississippi border, helping to keep production and refining operations running unimpeded at most energy facilities in the Gulf and along the Louisiana coast.
For now, Tropical Storm Gordon has winds blowing at 65 mph (100 km/hour), and its eye (the center of the storm) is located about 145 miles (235 kilometers) from the mouth of the Mississippi River, the NHC said.
Tropical-storm-force winds (39-plus mph) from #Gordon are expected to reach the northern Gulf Coast by Tuesday afternoon, with hurricane-force winds (74-plus mph) expected by Tuesday evening.
By Tuesday afternoon, the storm was centered 155 kilometres southeast of Biloxi, Mississippi, with top sustained winds of 110 km/h.
Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards declared a state of emergency, as did New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell. Others did their familiar pre-storm preparation rituals, including the staff at The Hotel Whiskey in Pass Christian, Mississippi, only about a block away from the Gulf of Mexico.
Gordon will bring some much needed rain to parts of our area today.
First responders from Escambia County Emergency Communications said a child died after a tree fell on a mobile home during Tropical Storm Gordon.
"There are no dunes and there's no protection, so the realty company we rented from moved us across the street and down so that we would be safe", said Robin Berry.
Smith said there's more to it than rain and flooding; it's also the unsafe rip currents and possible power outages.
Airlines including Delta, Southwest and Frontierwarned that delays and flight cancellations are possible at airports near the Gulf Coast because of the storm, and that they may waive fees for itinerary changes.

A storm surge warning was issued from Pascagoula, MS, to the Alabama-Florida border, where forecasters expect a surge of 2 to 4 feet.
Gordon is expected to pass through the eastern edge of the Gulf's offshore oil and natural gas platforms where it will probably have little impact because it isn't that strong and will pass through the area quickly, according to the Commodity Weather Group.
Gordon wasn't the only storm being watched by forecasters. "Now is the time to get your plans all set", he said.
McDonalds poster prank goes viral
And judging by the response Jevh Maravilla and Christian Toledo are getting worldwide, a lot of people seem to be lovin' it. The pair even bought a McDonald's uniform from a charity shop for seven dollars to help them execute the prank.
Kavanaugh hearing opens in chaos
If all goes as Republicans plan, Kavanaugh could be on the bench when the court begins its new term on October 1. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) estimated it would have required staffers to review 7,000 pages of documents per hour.
