Vice President Mike Pence lavishly praised the "lifetime of service" of the late senator John McCain during a speech Thursday to a veterans' group that had criticized President Donald Trump this week for not immediately issuing a proclamation to lower US flags in the senator's honor.

Social media users read some hostility on Meghan McCain's face as Vice President Mike Pence spoke during a memorial service for her father, the late Sen.

"As President Trump said yesterday", he continued, "we respect his service to the country".

Before his death, McCain requested Trump not attend his funeral.

Pence also praised McCain during the American Legion's 100th National Convention on Thursday, saying McCain was "a particular veteran that I know is on the hearts and minds of people all across America as we gather here", USA Today reported. "And that John McCain served his country honorably".

"He came from a long line of service in uniform", Pence said of the Arizona Republican.

Pence said during his years in Congress and as vice president, he and McCain didn't always agree, and McCain "almost always noticed".

His office said Friday that Pence planned to spend the Labor Day weekend in the state with his family.

The Senator died last Saturday, days before his 82nd birthday.

Moments before the ceremony began, rain poured down as US service members escorted McCain's flag-draped casket up the Capitol steps, as senators and members of Congress - in addition to McCain's widow, Cindy, his children, and his 106-year-old mother Roberta - awaited his arrival.

Others who spoke at the service in Washington, D.C. included Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis). Air Force Two was seen landing at the Burlington International Airport around 1:30 p.m. Burial at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, is scheduled to take place Sunday.

Pence delivered an executive wreath in front of McCain's casket on behalf of the executive branch.
