Medical association calls for West Nile virus action plan

In 2017, 90 human cases of West Nile virus were recorded in IL.

The Georgia Department of Public Health has confirmed seven cases of the West Nile Virus in the state, resulting in one death.

With Milner Stadium in the middle alert zone, high school football games this week mean there will be a lot more people in the area than just residents.

County officials say they will continue to monitor the situation, spray for adult mosquitoes and treating standing water that contains mosquito larvae.

The most effective way to protect against WNV infection and all mosquito-borne diseases is to prevent mosquito bites.

The State of IL is reporting its first death this season due to an infection of West Nile virus.

However, it can develop into a severe illness and cause permanent damage to a person's central nervous system.

Use Insect Repellent: When used as directed, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-registered insect repellents are proven safe and effective, even for pregnant and breastfeeding women. Always follow label directions.

- Drain artificial sources of standing water where you live, work and play.

If you must be out during these hours, wear light-colored long-sleeve shirts and long trousers. Also, any holes in screen doors or windows should be fixed so that bugs can not find their way inside.

In a statement, IDPH Director Nirav Shah M.D., J.D. says that while the end of summer is nearing, "West Nile virus remains a risk until the first hard frost". There were 63 cases in 2017 and one death, according to the Mississippi State Department of Health.

There have been confirmed cases in CT this season as well. Of that number, two were Montgomery County residents.

A health department official tells us in the last five years, the reported human cases range from 6 to 21, making the average 11 cases per year.

The CDC has reported less than 20 cases every year dating back to 2013.
