Air quality in the Portland metro area remains 'unhealthy'

Air quality alert in effect due to conditions reaching hazardous levels

It's the second time in a week smoke from wildfires has pushed the state's air quality into unsafe level.

Benenati said along with the app, there are additional resources on DEQ's website if you're looking for more information.

"Most of the summer we've kept our onshore winds, even though it's been hot, which kept the smoke out of here until about two weeks ago", said Marriott.

"Wholesale improvement to air quality is not likely until midweek".

Environment Canada warns that the poor air can cause coughing, headaches, shortness of breath and throat irritation, specifically in seniors, children and anyone with cardiovascular or lung diseases.

Seattle's Space Needle was swathed in haze, and it was impossible to see nearby mountains.

Forest fires are common, but typical Seattle-area weather pushes it out of the way quickly.

Those who typically walk or jog to work are advised to consider taking a bus or Skytrain instead until the air quality improves.

The Minnesota Department of Health said in a 2015 report that air pollution like that from wildfires - specifically, small particulates - contributed to more than 2,000 deaths and 600 emergency room visits in 2008 alone.

"The trend is clear. It's going to be somewhere".

The Federal Aviation Administration said planes bound for the Sea-Tac International Airport, Seattle's main airport, may be delayed because of low visibility.

Air quality monitoring stations in Yakima, Toppenish, Sunnyside and White Swan are all reporting air quality as "hazardous".

The Puget Sound Air Agency said no outdoor burning is allowed as of 5 p.m. Monday in order to reduce any additional harm from excess air pollution.

Those with chronic underlying medical conditions are recommended to avoid strenuous exercise and time outdoors until the advisory is lifted.
