West Nile virus has been confirmed in several groups of mosquitoes under surveillance in Cabell County, the Cabell-Huntington Health Department confirmed Friday.

Hoosier health officials are urging IN residents to take steps to protect themselves from mosquito bites amid an increase IN West Nile virus activity across the state IN 2018.

"West Nile Virus is endemic in Orange County, recurring every year during the summer months and continuing into the fall", said Dr. Eric Handler, County Health Officer. Prior to this year, CT has seen 134 cases with three fatalities, the DPH said.

He recommends using bug sprays with Deet, but there are other options like lemon eucalyptus oil that combat West Nile mosquitoes.

Dawn and dusk: Mosquitoes bite in the early morning and evening so it is important to wear proper clothing and repellent if outside during these times. People who develop any of these symptoms should see their healthcare provider immediately.

Eliminate standing water where mosquitoes can lay eggs.

Change water in birdbaths frequently, at least once a week.

People mildly affected by West Nile might have a fever, headache and body aches, but serious illness, such as encephalitis and meningitis, and death are possible, the release said.

Clean and chlorinate swimming pools.

When outdoors, wear long trousers, a long-sleeved shirt and socks. More than 40,000 acres were treated over two nights in July using Trumpet EC, an insecticide routinely used for mosquito control throughout the country. Try to avoid outdoor activities during these times.

Mosquitoes themselves are infected mainly by wild birds.

Keep mosquitoes out of your house by repairing holes in screens and making sure screens fit tightly to doors and windows.

That includes the two in Waterloo region, one in the Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health coverage area and one in Perth county.
