Wrong Tommy Fleetwood gets paid over $150,000 for British Open

The real Tommy Fleetwood prepares for the PGA Championship at Bellerive Country Club after his Open Championship

"I emailed them back and I said, 'Well, I plan on sending it back, but you've got to excuse me that I'm not going to send it to this thing you're sending me randomly in email".

The famous Fleetwood, who was most likely focused on the more pressing issue of facing down the rest of the world's best golfers in the PGA Championship this weekend, seemed about as calm as someone could be about a six-figure banking mistake.

It may have been easy to miss for the more accomplished Fleetwood, whose career earnings are listed at $20.32 million on the European Tour's website.

"It was only for $14 or something but he called it up and looked at his statement, and that's when he shouted 'Holy smoke, I've just had US$154,000 paid into my account!'"

One of the Florida pro's friends posted a picture of Fleetwood's account to Twitter on Wednesday.

The problem: The European Tour sent the money to the wrong Tommy Fleetwood.

You're the Tommy Fleetwood who attempted, unsuccessfully, to qualify for the European Seniors Tour and now, 58, caddies at the Streamsong Resort in Bowling Green, Florida. They [the European Tour] are looking into it and I'm sure they'll feel pretty bad about it. That said, should his winnings ever go missing again in the future, Fleetwood will know the first place to look. It's a amusing story. Fleetwood's wife said in an email, "apparently the payments were made manually, not on automated system and there are two TF's somehow?"

Luckily for the current PGA pro, Thomas stopped by his local bank this week and had the accounting error corrected, much to his chagrin.

According to the report, she described the direct deposit blunder as a "huge clerical error by the European Tour accounts department".
