Washington, DC Officials Prepare for Upcoming Nationalist Rally a Year After Charlottesville

Charlottesville's interim City Manager Mike Murphy said many lessons were learned from last year's tragic events. "We hope the anniversary of those events passes peacefully", said Northam.

Numerous most prominent white supremacist leaders from last year's rally have suffered setbacks in the past year, a result of forceful counter-protests, a series of lawsuits filed against different white supremacist leaders, movement feuds and infighting, and, in one case, prosecution for domestic violence.

That quaint Virginia college town, still wrestling with slavery's legacy, was the scene of protests, violent clashes and the death of 32-year-old Heather Heyer, who was struck down by a speeding auto that plowed into a group of counterprotesters.

Rally organizers cautioned attendees not to react with anger against any counter protesters.

The 20-year-old who drove the auto into the crowd was charged with second-degree murder.

The Law Center's outreach director Lecia Brooks told AFP the rally reflected a "continued emboldenment on the part of white nationalists in this country".

The ugly scenes highlighted the growing boldness of America's extreme right.

The declarations were made to address the "potential impacts" of events in and around Charlottesville and in Washington, D.C., August 10-12, according to an announcement from the city. This year, the same permits were denied to them.

During the Unite the Right rally on August 12, 2017, rally participants included neo-Nazi and alt-right members.

NBC29 reported Thursday that Jason Kessler's permit was given the OK for the rally on Sunday in Lafayette Park.

Law enforcement officials say there will be a heavy police presence meant to deter any violence.

"If you come here with the intent to hurt someone or break something, we're going to put you under arrest", said Newsham.

A vehicle drove into a group of protesters demonstrating against a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville last August, killing a woman.

Last year's rally did not come with conversations and many peaceful demonstrations, however.

Condemning racism in any form is the kind of pro forma gesture that would have been unremarkable for every commander in chief in recent decades. Safety and security are always a top concern as restaurants are public spaces.

"We acted in advance of last year's horrific event in Charlottesville and if we become aware of similar information we won't hesitate to do so again", the company said in a statement.

The population of the USA capital is almost half black, according to the U.S. census bureau. Organizers said that at approximately 3:30 p.m., participants will begin marching to Lafayette Square to voice their opposition to the white nationalists and white supremacists who are meeting there.

Officials, who are expecting "anywhere from one to 400" participants in "Unite the Right", admitted that the white supremacists could spontaneously change their march route from the Foggy Bottom Metro station - at George Washington University, which is locking down its campus that day - to the White House. It also warned its followers not to bring guns or "engage in any fighting".
