Tom Brady’s contract: Patriots add $5M in new incentives
The diagnosis ends his rookie season nearly immediately after it had begun.
Washington took Guice with the 59th overall pick after the running back fell on draft night over concerns about his maturity. But he underwent an MRI on Friday morning where the more serious injury was discovered. It's not clear whether that previous injury made him more susceptible to the torn ACL, but there were National Football League teams that did extra evaluation on his medical status leading up to the draft because of that knee. He had suffered a hyperextended knee (yes, the same knee) at LSU but opted against surgery, also per Rapoport. That's certainly possible, considering Brady was the NFL's MVP last season, but he's finished top-five in all five of those categories simultaneously just three times in his 18-year career (2007, 2011 and 2017). Washington will now rely on Rob Kelley and Samaje Perine to be their primary backs, while Chris Thompson will continue his role as a third-down specialist. He finished with six carries for 19 yards in his debut.
However, Kelley's fallout ensued in Year 2 of the young back's career. He also improved his run grade from 45.3 - the lowest mark among running backs from Weeks 1-10 - to 65.3.
Guice injured the knee on an impressive 34-yard run that was ultimately called back because of a holding penalty. And losing a year of development with a running back pushes the Redskins' pursuit for a strong rushing attack another year down the road.
History made at Lord's as rain prevents play on day one
Play was scheduled to start at 11:00 BST, but steady rain kept the covers on the pitch and prevented the toss at 10:30. Chris Woakes is expected to replace all-rounder Ben Stokes, who is standing trial in Bristol on a charge of affray.
