England captain Joe Root was brilliantly run out by Kohli at Edgbaston and the Indian captain mocked his opposite number with his celebration, but the hosts would be laughing last after dramatically recovering to win the first test and they have taken firm control of the second ahead of day three in London. On the Day 2, English bowlers used the conditions perfectly and restricted India for just 107 runs in the first innings.

In the brief morning session, Anderson got England off to a fine start, clean bowling opener Murali Vijay before removing Lokesh Rahul, who was caught behind by keeper Jonny Bairstow.

After a rain delay, Cheteshwar Pujara was run out by debutant Ollie Pope and a downpour followed immediately with skipper Virat Kohli the unbeaten batsman on three.

Earlier, Bairstow and Jos Buttler (24) took their fifth-wicket partnership to 42 runs.

James Anderson took five wickets in ideal swing bowling conditions after rain prevented play on Thursday (Friday NZ time) and more showers allowed only 8.3 overs before the first prolonged passage of play began shortly after 5pm local time.

"I would be so disappointed if I had messed up today because they were ideal conditions to bowl in".

"When we bowl like that we would bowl most teams out in the world, we were that good".

"I thought the wicket, because of the weather we can not control, it was to bat on", he said.

This though was not mere riding of luck from Kohli, who, doing his best not to prod at the ball and playing with soft hands, maximised his chances of any edges dropping short of the slips. "When you build pressure all day no matter who you are it is hard", he said.

Earlier, India made a decision to play with two spinners in Ravichandran Ashwin and Kuldeep Yadav, whereas Cheteshwar Pujara had a horrific return to Test cricket.

With the forecast set fair for Saturday, it will be the turn of England's batsmen to drive home the advantage given to them by their bowlers on a day where there were two stoppages for rain spanning more than five hours.

England went in with all-rounder Chris Woakes for the unavailable Ben Stokes while the visitors selected Cheteshwar Pujara and Kuldeep Yadav.
