The Perseids produce the highest number of bright fireball meteors.
The Perseid meteor shower is happening and Space.com says the shower will peak during overnight hours as Aug. 11 turns into Aug. 12 and again overnight on Aug. 12-13.
The annual show is the result of Earth's proximity to the "gritty" debris of Comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle, Boyle said in a release. However, they can be seen clearest after sunset. The August shower gets its name from the constellation Perseus because the meteors appear to originate there.
You can still see meteors before and after the Perseid showers peak, and you dont need special equipment. That's fewer than the 150-200 meteors per hour that can be seen in years when the shower is in outburst, but will likely still make for quite the show. Three years later, an Italian astronomer Giovanni Schiaperelli identified the comet as the origin of the Perseid meteor shower.
If you want to catch the Perseids in all their glory, a drive to the darkest place near your home should suffice.
This year the meteor shower is predicted to reach its peak on the night of August 12, as Earth passes through the densest part of the Comet 109/Swift-Tuttle's trail. However, this year with a dark clear sky, it's possible to see an awesome light show.
Unlike other celestial sightings that require a telescope or binoculars, the best way to watch a meteor shower is with the naked eye.
As the particles, ranging in size from a grain of sand to a pea, hit the Earth's atmosphere at 37 miles per second, they burn up and streak across the sky.
The best time to see the most meteors according to the American Meteor Society tends to be just before dawn, around 4 a.m. local time. Jupiter, Saturn and, last but not least, Mars will follow, sweeping in the east at about 11 p.m., 2 a.m. and 4 a.m. respectively.
In 2018, the peak night of this shower will be totally free of moonlight.
