Tens of thousands of people have rallied in central Tel Aviv

The strike hit a building that Palestinians say housed a cultural centre and other offices in the middle of the city, an AFP correspondent said.

After the BBC published a headline that read, "Israeli air strikes "kill woman and a toddler, '" the Israeli Foreign Ministry issued a formal complaint to the British outlet, and it ultimately changed the headline to, "Gaza air strikes 'kill woman and child" after rockets hit Israel".

Although most of the projectiles have fallen on open ground or within the Strip, or in their case have been intercepted by the Iron Dome, some of these have impacted and damaged buildings in some locations such as Sderot or Netivot, suffering the first of the cities a direct impact on their urban area in one of the first waves of launches.

Hamas, an Islamist group designated by most Western countries as a terrorist organization, has fought three wars with Israel in the past decade.

A flare up in cross-border violence has seen three Palestinians killed in Israeli air raids, and Hamas rockets fired into southern Israel.

According to Israeli press reports, a total of nine Israelis have recently been injured by rockets fired from Gaza.

The military said more than 180 rockets and mortar bombs were fired from Gaza.

Hamas official Fawzi Barhoum said in a statement that it was Israel who was responsible for the violence, and that "in the event of continued aggression, shelling and killing of the Palestinian people in Gaza, the resistance will not be silent".

The Hamas terror group said a ceasefire had been reached "on the basis of mutual calm" and went into effect at midnight.

Medics reported at least four wounded taken to Israeli hospitals, including a seriously injured 30-year-old Thai woman. Those have hit a stumbling block as Hamas is insisting that the release include all prisoners who were part of a 2011 prisoner exchange for Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit but have since been rearrested, according to Palestinian officials, who declined to be named because of the sensitivity of the talks.

"We urge the Palestinians and the Israelis to display restraint and to take measures towards ruling out the relapses of violence with unpredictable aftermaths", Zakharova said. "I am sure the residents of the Gaza border communities are strong and we call on them to continue to listen to the instructions of the Home Front Command", Head of the Southern Command Maj.

i24NEWS Defense Correspondent Daniel Tsemach contributed reporting from southern Israel.

Israeli army spokesman Lt. Col. Jonathan Conricus insisted Israel only targeted Hamas military targets in Gaza.

Israel has also been battling nearly daily airborne arson attacks from Gaza caused by kites and balloons rigged with incendiary devices flown across the border that have sparked large fires that destroyed forests, burned crops and killed wildlife and livestock.

Tension along the Israel-Gaza border has escalated since late March, when Hamas launched what would become regular mass protests along Israel's perimeter fence with Gaza.

Israeli air forces pounded the Gaza Strip overnight, targeting over 100 sites in the besieged coastal enclave. One Israeli soldier has been shot dead by a Palestinian sniper.

Mladenov warned that "if the current escalation however is not contained immediately, the situation can rapidly deteriorate with devastating consequences for all people".

At least 165 Palestinians have killed by Israeli fire since March 30.
