"A resolution nominating Imran Khan as our candidate for prime minister has been passed unanimously", the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf's (Movement for Justice, or PTI) senior leader, Shah Qureshi, told the media after a party meeting.
The meeting was taken into confidence about the formation of the government and it unanimously chose to nominate Imran Khan as party nominee for the Prime Minister, according to PTI sources.
Qureshi's views were echoed by party spokesperson Fawad Chaudhry, who claimed that the PTI now has "the backing of 174 candidates in NA".
Sharing details of election results, an ECP official said PTI was leading with 115 seats while PML-N secured 64 seats while PPP secured 43 seats, according to reports in The Express Tribune. "Now a great responsibility has come on my shoulders".
They said that it's been a great achievement of Imran Khan to have awakened political awareness among the youth.
He said that corruption and nepotism would be completely uprooted from the country. "I will come up to people's expectations". "The first phase of my 22-year-old struggle is completed", apparently referring to the setting up of the party by him in 1996.
Also on Monday, the Pakistan Muslim League convened in the eastern city of Lahore to discuss the formation of the provincial government in Punjab. It's relying on assembly members who won seats as independents to side with it in the 371-seat provincial assembly.
The ECP has conditionally notified results of three seats won by Mr Khan, The News reported.
The former cricket star is facing an inquiry for allegedly using the helicopters of the northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province, where his party ruled from June 2013 to May 2018, for his private visits.
