History made at Lord's as rain prevents play on day one

As England and India clash at Lord's Cricket Ground today, MiD DAY brings you the most amusing, unusual and controversial events at the hallowed venue. Under sunny skies, regularly interrupted by large banks of innocuous high-flying clouds, both sides go through their final practices - as groundstaff get on with all the last-minute jobs that are required to ready the sport's most famous colosseum for match day.

That thought might well have changed now, given the weather conditions and forecast ahead.

The rain, however, fell consistently throughout the day, much to the frustration of the players as well as the supporters who had made the trip to the Home of Cricket.

Play was scheduled to start at 11:00 BST, but steady rain kept the covers on the pitch and prevented the toss at 10:30.

England, 1-0 up in the five-match series after an absorbing 31-run win at Edgbaston last week, will hand a debut to Surrey batsman Ollie Pope with the 20-year-old replacing the out-of-form Dawid Malan.

Chris Woakes is expected to replace all-rounder Ben Stokes, who is standing trial in Bristol on a charge of affray.

Thursday was the first time a full day's play has been lost at Lord's since the opening day of the first test against Pakistan in 2001. Virat Kohli and Co are now 0-1 down in the series and Gautam Gambhir, the Delhi-born cricketer, reckons that it will be extremely hard for India to make a comeback if they lose the upcoming match.
