College Basketball Coach Arrested In Deadly Attack On Tourist

Jamill Jones right was charged with assault in connection with a deadly attack on tourist Sandor Szabo in New York City

Wake Forest assistant coach Jamill Jones has been charged with assault in the case of a Queens attack that led to the death of a Florida tourist, according to The New York Post.

Jones, who has been on Wake Forest head coach Danny Manning's staff since May 2017, reportedly turned himself in to police Thursday morning while accompanied by a lawyer.

A Florida tourist died in NY after he was punched by a man he probably thought was an Uber driver, his family said. Police say Jones drove away from the scene, and Szabo was transported to a hospital, where on Tuesday he died from his injuries. He was arraigned today on a misdemeanor assault charge and released on his own recognizance after entering his plea.

Jamill Jones allegedly slugged Boca Raton marketing professional Sandor Szabo so hard on Sunday that he fell backward, hit his head on the concrete and lost consciousness. His attorney calls the encounter a "tragic accident".

"We have just been made aware of this matter and we are gathering information", Wake Forrest said in a statement to USA TODAY Sports. His family said he was in town for his brother's wedding and trying to get a ride at the time of the incident. The investigation is ongoing.

Wake Forest is coached by former National Basketball Association star Danny Manning.

Jones, a Philadelphia native, previously coached at Central Florida, Virginia Commonwealth and Florida Gulf Coast. "Sandor was super outgoing, friendly, and an incredibly smart businessman".

"He was always upbeat, positive, kind and caring", the post continued.

"His lovely spirit and his love of life will remain with us", the company said in the Facebook post.
