How Manchester City could look in

It is no secret that Mourinho has been keen to add to his squad and would have liked to add a defender.

And ahead of his side's Premier League season opener against Leicester on Friday night, Mourinho addressed reporters' questions about whether United would be getting any late business done on deadline day.

Liverpool will end their 28-year wait for a Premier League title by dethroning Manchester City this season, according to Ian Wright.

United have endured a hard summer transfer window as they have tried and failed to sign a host of defensive targets, with Tottenham centre-back Toby Alderweireld and Leicester's Harry Maguire among the names on their wish-list.

The striker turned broadcast pundit believes Liverpool's mental edge over City following three victories against them last season - twice in the Champions League and once in the league - could be the difference if City do not runaway with the title in the manner they did last season. I repeat: "pre-season hard when you don't have your players to work, as simple as that".

"I am not confident, and the market closes today, so it's time, at least for me, to stop thinking about the market because the market will be closed". I don't think just because they haven't signed a centre-back we should be sat here thinking "We'll let Manchester United off the hook, they shouldn't be challenging this year".

"They return on Monday, trained Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and today so you can imagine that they are not really fit and ready but we have needs", Mourinho said.

"I will have to focus on the players I have and in relation to this first couple of matches".

"Because it is very important their feeling and to understand how they think they can help or not help". We go with everything we have in that first match.

Romelu Lukaku, Marcus Rashford and Phil Jones all came back early from their own extended breaks but Mourinho sounded downbeat again when he was asked about the new season.

The Red Devils coach has cut a sullen figure throughout pre-season with the former Chelsea boss unable to hide his dissatisfaction with Brazil worldwide midfielder Fred being his sides only high profile signing.

"It is hard to believe that we finished second because you are capable of making people that finish second look like they were relegated, and people who win nothing, finish below us, and you make them look like serial winners".
