Transfer deadline day: Manchester United 'launch shock Diego Godin bid'

Diego Godin is set to reject Manchester United's approach

Diego Godin

Solhekol added that the 32-year-old himself didn't want the move because he's about to sign a new deal at the Wanda Metropolitano after United triggered his £18m release clause and offered him £150,000-a-week wages.

United's bid for Harry Maguire, Toby Alderweireld, Jerome Boateng and Yerry Mina have all failed.

Sources close to the negotiations confirmed on Thursday that officials from United contacted Atletico this week to discuss a deal for Godin, who was entering the final year of his contract.

Sky Sports News understands that United have approached Atletico Madrid with a view to signing the Uruguay defender, as Jose Mourinho is desperate to strengthen at the back before the transfer window closes.

Shortly after, though, and the rumours simmered down with reports that Godin had personally rejected a move and that he had in fact signed a new contract in Spain.

The Red Devils have spent the day frantically chasing a defender - but it appears they will end up with no-one coming through the door.

The Portuguese has made three signings this summer - Fred, Diogo Dalot and Lee Grant - but has so far been frustrated in his search for a centre-back.

It will come as little surprise that rival supporters found the news rather amusing with United's misfortune somewhat compiling their struggles this summer.

Manchester United made an eleventh hour effort to sign Uruguayan worldwide Diego Godin, but their advances have been rebuffed by the defender.

Manchester United start their Premier League campaign tomorrow with a game against Leicester City.
