In light of the earhtquake that rocked Lombok yesterday, 142 soldiers of the Army's Special Forces (Kopassus) were mobilized to assist in the rescue of hikers who are trapped at Mount Rinjani after landslides blocked its access routes.

Hundreds of hikers including British tourists have been evacuated from an Indonesian volcano after landslides left them trapped on the mountain. The country is home to about 130 active volcanoes.

Hundreds managed to find a way down on Sunday and over 500 more reached safety Monday night.

The toll of the natural disaster, which killed 16 people and left hundreds of others homeless, is still being counted across the rest of the popular tourist spot.

Helicopters and search teams were deployed to scour the volcano's slopes and drop food supplies for those stranded on the mountain.

The volcano, which rises 3,726m (12,224ft) above sea level and is the second-highest one in Indonesia, is a favourite among sightseers.

A local hotel owner told CNN many residents were still asleep when the quake struck at 5.45 a.m. local time Sunday (6:45 p.m. Saturday ET).

Anci, a villager from near the quake epicenter, said he and his family spent the night in a makeshift tent, anxious that aftershocks could cause more buildings to collapse.

At least 543 tourists have been rescued from a mountain in tourist destination of Lombok Island of central Indonesia after a strong quake cut off routes, a government official said on Tuesday.

More than 1000 houses were damaged, with the tremors from the natural disaster felt in the neighbouring island of Bali.

In the hard hit village of Medas, north of Mataram, the majority of houses were destroyed and the area was deserted Monday save for a few people searching for possessions in the rubble, an AFP reporter at the scene said.
