"This included a promise to bring "Buck-a-Beer" back to Ontario".
Doug Ford promised 'Buck-a-Beer, ' and now that he's premier he's delivering on that promise quite quickly.
As well, he added, "the respect and appreciation they will get from consumers will be priceless".
Ontario Premier Doug Ford is expected to roll out the provincial government's buck a beer plan when he visits a brewery early today in Picton, Ont.
"Ontario, the day you've been waiting for is finally here", Ford said at a news conference inside the brewery, "We are bringing back a buck a beer to Ontario". It will go into effect on Monday August 27, 2018.
The current minimum price will drop from $1.25 to $1, according to the Premier. "We're just trying to put money back in the consumer's pockets".
For example, a brewer seeking one shelf extender filled with its product in every LCBO where one is available specifically for Ontario beer - 361 of the LCBO's 660 stores - would pay more than $27,000 for the promotion to run for roughly one month.
What it will mean is that the government will offer "non-financial incentives" to brewers who sell beer for $1. The price does not include a bottle deposit and does not apply to draft beer.
Paul Meek with Kitchesippi Beer Company isn't on board with the idea.
"To be honest, I don't think it's going to affect us a whole lot", he said. It's up to brewers to actually pass down the savings of $1 beer to consumers. "You may have some breweries react negatively", he said, explaining that lower-priced brands are more likely to opt-in to the scheme. "I don't need a #BuckABeer, I need my fellow Canadians to have a #BasicIncome and to be proud to live in a nation that considers food security, and poverty more important than cheap beer".
He's not the only brewery thinking that way. "So yah, we're out".
"Yeah, I'll take it", said one man unloading empties.
It added that the taxes make up "a large part" of beer prices, and affordability of beer has to take that into account.
"Lowering the price of alcohol carries implications and risks for public safety", MADD Canada said in a statement.
Many have questioned Ford's timing on this, not only because it will kick in just ahead of the Labor Day Weekend but because the announcement falls on the heels of cuts to social assistance.
"Lower alcohol prices can lead to increased consumption, particularly among those with alcohol problems, and among young people, and that increased consumption can in turn lead to increased alcohol-related problems, including impaired driving".
MoviePass to limit subscribers to 3 movies per month
That change would also come with a limit on new releases , with a two week block on getting tickets to a freshly-screened movie. Following last week's news of a price increase , MoviePass has now announced plans to alter its standard monthly plan instead.
