Fallout 76 will not be available on Steam

Fallout 76 beta full game

According to the company, any progress made within the beta will carry over to the full game after launch.

We're not totally sure of the scale of Fallout 76 outside of its very large and detailed map but hopefully, this is a sign of a really ambitious and meaty game otherwise, Bethesda risks showing all their cards significantly early.

Bethesda joins other publishers in making its next, hotly anticipated game available outside of Steam.

While Steam still provides a valuable platform for small to mid-sized games, Rogers said Bethesda is big enough to stand on its own. Fallout 76 will first launch as the BETA, which Bethesda plans to be the full game with progress saved to continue under the official launch.

Steam really has been the platform of choice for Bethesda over the last few years.

Bethesda has revealed that it will be ditching Steam for the PC launch of Fallout 76 and will bring the keenly anticipated title to its own launcher instead. Confirmation followed a couple of hints, including the presence of a generic "PC game" logo on the Fallout 76 purchase page.

The upcoming Fallout 76 B.E.T.A. (Break it Early Test Application) won't simply be a vertical slice of the game.

The move doesn't rule out a physical release though or the chance of the game being released on Steam at a later date, as happened with Fallout Shelter.

The change won't make much difference to anyone playing the game, other than being yet another new thing you'll have to sign up to and forget the password for.
