Apple drops Infowars and other podcasts from iTunes

Apple Removes Podcasts Of Man Who Said September 11 Attacks Were Staged

The company said it "unpublished" the four pages after receiving reports that they contained content "glorifying violence" and used "dehumanizing language" to describe Muslims, immigrants and transgender people.

In a statement to Buzzfeed, Apple said it took down Jones' content because the company doesn't "tolerate hate speech".

"We believe in representing a wide range of views, so long as people are respectful to those with differing opinions", Facebook wrote in a statement.

Jones is a conservative radio host and conspiracy theorist who, among other things, claimed the 2012 Sandy Hook elementary school massacre was a hoax.

Facebook Inc announced on Monday that it had removed four pages belonging to US conspiracy theorist Alex Jones for "repeatedly posting content over the past several days" that breaks its community standards.

Infowars didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

Spotify, which added Jones to its podcast offerings last month only to be met with widespread criticism and threats of a boycott, is also ending its relationship with Jones.

The ban follows the removal of a handful of videos from those pages which also landed Jones in a 30-day timeout from Facebook.

The moves by Apple and Facebook are the most sweeping of a recent crackdown on Jones's programs by online sites that have suspended or removed some of his conspiracy-driven content. "Podcasts that violate these guidelines are removed from our directory making them no longer searchable or available for download or streaming". It has suggested that the Sandy Hook massacre was a hoax, and that the September 11 terrorist attacks were an inside job orchestrated by the United States government. The only show that remains is "Real News With David Knight", which, as you might imagine, is not a podcast about real news.

The firm said it removed the entire iTunes library for five of Jones's six InfoWars podcasts, including the shows "War Room" and the daily "The Alex Jones Show". Spotify took down several episodes of the show last week. The shooting killed 26 children and adults at the elementary school in CT.

"While much of the discussion around Infowars has been related to false news, which is a serious issue that we are working to address by demoting links marked wrong by fact checkers and suggesting additional content, none of the violations that spurred today's removals were related to this". There are plenty of conservative & liberal podcasts that don't harass the parents of children killed at Sandy Hook or Las Vegas shooting victims.
