West Nile Detected in Several States

Three mosquito pools have tested positive for the West Nile Virus, the Portsmouth City Health Department reports.

The department says 12 Iowans were diagnosed with West Nile virus previous year and two died.

The department said the child was experiencing neurological symptoms and was hospitalized. Officials did not release any details as to the person's sex or age.

There are no reported human cases at this time. Officials with the Maryland Department of Health said in a statement that the infected person lives in the Baltimore region.

However, the season isn't over yet, and the number of "vector" mosquitoes is increasing as the summer moves on, he said.

The positive test came from one of the Haldimand-Norfolk Health Unit's mosquito traps in Simcoe. The majority of people who develop this type of West Nile virus recover completely, but fatigue and weakness can last for weeks or months. In Virginia, there were 13, and in the District, there were four.

Symptoms of West Nile Virus include fever, headache, body aches, nausea, vomiting, swollen lymph glands, a rash on the chest, stomach or back, and a fever. The most vulnerable people are those who are at least 50 or have weakened immune systems. Mosquitoes become infected when they feed on infected birds.

Since mosquitoes are attracted to standing water, residents are also advised to clean or empty out items that may hold water such as old tires, buckets, planters, toys, birdbaths, flowerpots, tarps, trash containers, downspout extensions and other containers to stop mosquitoes from breeding on your property.
