Disease-carrying mosquitoes on the rise overall numbers down

Kansas health officials say two Johnson County residents have developed serious West Nile Virus infections.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment said the north central, south central, northwest and southwest regions of the state are under a high-risk warning for the virus.

Last year, one Londoner was infected with West Nile but it was not clear whether the person contracted the virus in the city. The municipality, along with Swoyersville, Forty Fort, parts of Edwardsville and Kingston boroughs and Wilkes-Barre City will be sprayed in the early evening with AquaDUET, which is a type of insecticide that will reduce the adult mosquito populations that may carry West Nile Virus. People who have had the virus before are considered immune. WNV can be spread to people through mosquito bites, but it is not spread from person to person.

There are no vaccines or medications to treat West Nile, the KDHE said.

Apply insect repellents that contain the active ingredient DEET, or other EPA-approved products to exposed skin or clothing, and always following the manufacturer's directions for use.

Get rid of mosquito breeding sites by emptying standing water from flower pots, buckets and barrels.

Be sure to keep roof gutters clear of debris and keep grass cut short and shrubbery well-trimmed around your home to eliminate mosquito hiding places. Birds, horses and humans can get infected through a single bite. Drill holes in tire swings so water drains out.

The insects were captured on July 24.

Symptoms include headache, neck stiffness, disorientation, coma, fever, tremors, muscle weakness, vision loss, numbness and paralysis.
