YouTube dark theme now available for some on Android

YouTube for Android gets dark theme

The dark mode debuted on iOS devices earlier this year and it has finally made it to Android as well. But oddly enough, the feature was only ready for Apple's devices and would be "coming soon" to Android. Not only that, but the black theme of the application under the dark mode setting will save battery as well. Users could then choose to dismiss the prompt and enjoy the dark theme, or turn it off if they prefer a brighter background. It is also worth noting that phones with the OLED panel will deliver darker blacks than standard display panels.

What is the one thing that could make the most popular video streaming service an even better experience?

If you can't wait for YouTube to flip the switch, you can try this method detailed over on XDA Developers Forum to enable the feature - but you'll need root access to get it to work.

The update is showing up for users who have posted screen shots on reddit, advising that the dark mode simply appeared when they opened the app.

The "Dark theme" toggle can also be located in the Settings menu where it's listed under the General menu just below the "Remind me to take a break" feature.

Tap your avatar in the top-right corner. Google has not officially stated why it has taken the company so long to bring this feature to Android.
