West Nile virus hospitalizes one in Orange County This case an elderly female in the city of Orange was reported last week
"Know your risk and take action to prevent mosquito bites to protect yourself and your family against West Nile virus", said Dr. Greg Lakin, State Health Officer.
"We are now in the peak West Nile season months in MS of July through September".
From 2012-2017, 25 cases of West Nile virus were reported in the state and there were seven reported deaths. Several species of mosquitoes are responsible for transmission of arboviruses but Culex species are the primary vector for West Nile virus in Kansas and the United States.
When you are outdoors, use insect repellent containing an EPA-registered active ingredient on skin and clothing, including DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus, or IR3535. Less than 1% of people infected with the virus get seriously ill with symptoms that include high fever, muscle weakness, stiff neck, disorientation, mental confusion, tremors, confusion, paralysis, and coma.
"The provincial mosquito surveillance program identified the infected mosquitoes in traps collected on July 10 in the Estevan area".
In rare instances, West Nile virus can be fatal. Reduce mosquito breeding sites around your home by removing sources of standing water, such as flower pots, buckets and barrels.
Mosquitoes need very little water to breed. These symptoms generally appear two to 14 days following the bite of an infected mosquito.
"What they'll also do is they'll continue to monitor the mosquito population until all tests produce negative results for any West Nile". Individuals older than 60 have the greatest risk of developing severe disease. Many people may not realize they have been infected.
Wear long sleeved shirt, socks, shoes, long trousers when you head outside for long periods or the time when the mosquitoes remain most active.
Make sure window and door screens are in good fix to prevent mosquito entry. Consult a physician before using repellents on infants.
According to the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, portions of northwest, northeast and southeast Kansas are under a moderate-risk warning for the virus. If it rains, the spraying will be done during the same hours Friday.
