Flash Flood potential for DC-metro area Sunday

The flood watch extends into Wednesday, and until it expires, drivers should be alert to the possibility of high water in some places due to consistent rain and storms.

The upper-level low which prompted several rounds of strong thunderstorms over the weekend is spinning around just to our west this morning and it will meander close by for at least the first half of the week.

It is moving slowly to the southeast.

The region's unsettled weather pattern continues, bringing the chance of soaking rains and flooded streets.

The storm is moving to the northeast and could produce quarter-sized hail along with 60 miles per hour winds.

The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Custer County, including the communities of Westcliffe and Silver Cliff. With the ground already saturated, it won't take much additional rain to produce localized flooding, especially in areas of poor drainage and along smaller streams and creeks.

A coastal flood advisory is also in effect for low-lying areas.

It's welcome news following a busy Monday that saw severe flash flooding shut down Highway 24 from Manitou Springs to Crystola.

The warning lasts until 7 a.m. Tuesday.

Flash Flood Watches are now in effect for a good portion of New Jersey as well as for the Poconos and Catskills, with heavy rain on the way for Wednesday.
