When will the Blood Moon lunar eclipse appear THIS WEEK?

23 July 2018, 07:25 | Justin Tyler

Scientists say the reason this lunar eclipse is especially long is that the moon is passing nearly directly through the central part of Earth's shadow. The total lunar eclipse will last almost 103 minutes, which makes it the century's longest.

The Blood Moon's path of totality falls over parts of Central Asia and Eastern Africa so Europe, South America and West Africa will only see the reddened moon at moonrise or moonset.

Star-gazers are set for a night-time spectacle as a blood moon lunar eclipse will be making an appearance at the end of the week.

In the US, the lunar eclipse will start around 1:14 p.m. ET, and the maximum period of totality will start around 4:21 p.m. ET, making it too light outside for the blood moon to be visible, Petro said.

Here are the timings to watch Lunar Eclipse in India on July 27, 2018.

The longest total lunar eclipse of the 20th century happened on July 16, 2000, according to EarthSky.

For the duration of the total lunar eclipse, the Moon will be completely engulfed by the Earth's shadow. By 10:15pm, it will be leaving Earth's shadow. "The total phase of the eclipse - called the totality - spans 1 hour 42 minutes and 57 seconds", said EarthSky's Bruce McClure. While the partial lunar eclipse is expected to end by 3.49 am, and the penumbral eclipse would end by about 4.58 am.

A lunar eclipse occurs when the moon passes directly behind the earth and into its shadow.
