CVS pharmacist denies hormones to trans woman

CVS pharmacist fired after refusing to fill transgender woman's hormone prescription | TheHill

CVS is apologizing for the actions of a pharmacists here in the Valley who refused to fill a hormone prescription for a transgender woman that pharmacists was sacked. "I left the store feeling mortified".

"He did not give me a clear reason for the refusal", Hall wrote, "embarrassed and distressed, I almost started crying in the middle of the store", she continued.

Hall wrote that she's lucky that her family and friends accept and support who she is. "He just kept asking, loudly and in front of other CVS staff and customers, why I was given the prescriptions".

Hall said she almost started crying. The state law does not mention hormone therapy prescriptions. "I just froze and worked on holding back the tears".

"When I asked for my doctor's prescription note, the pharmacist refused to give it back, so I was not even able to take it to another pharmacy to have my prescription filled", Hall wrote.

A transgender woman in Arizona was refused her hormone treatment medication by a CVS pharmacist.

Hilde Hall had gotten her first hormone therapy prescription from her doctor in April and immediately took it to a CVS Pharmacy in Fountain Hill to have it filled.

Hall says a pharmacist in the Phoenix suburb of Fountain Hills made her feel humiliated last April.

A CVS spokesperson, Michael J. DeAngelis, said in a statement Friday that the pharmacist's conduct "does not reflect our values or our commitment to inclusion, nondiscrimination and the delivery of outstanding patient care". Hall called the CVS complaint line many times, but "no one has addressed my concerns or offered me an apology". "Hilde said she was almost in tears by how the pharmacist was treating her, and no one should face that kind of judgment". In fact, CVS pharmacists were directly involved in the development of the HRC's resource guide for providing pharmacy care and services to LGBTQ patients.

Arizona is one of six states that allow pharmacies and pharmacists to refuse to fill some medications - usually those related to emergency contraception - on religious or moral grounds.

In a statement to CNN, CVS Health said the pharmacist violated its policies and is no longer employed by the company.

'We also apologize for not appropriately following up on Ms. Hall's original complaint to CVS, which was due to an unintentional oversight, ' he said in the email. My doctor ended up having to call the prescription into the local Walgreens, where the medication was filled without question.

"So far what I have experienced is a lot of dirty looks and a lot of some people spitefully using the wrong pronouns", Inderrinden said.

She claims the pharmacist loudly questioned her in front of other customers and rejected her and her doctor's requests to transfer the prescription to another location.

After Arteaga complained to the pharmacy board about a Walgreens pharmacist denying her a miscarriage-related prescription because of personal beliefs, the agency began an investigation. However, pharmacists are required under state law to inform the company "in advance about any religious convictions".
